Vs and Underwear buying Interview: Primary Research
Interview 1
Ella Mcinerney, Age 20
-Where do you buy your lingerie from?
Mainly buy it from Primark.
-How often do you buy it?
Only when I need it, every few months.
-What’s most important to you when choosing an underwear brand?
Comfort and Affordability
-When you hear ‘Victoria’s Secret’ what is your first thought?
I don't particularly like their ethics, and think their attitudes are behind and haven’t started progressing like other brands in the fashion industry. Overpriced.
-Have you bought from VS before? If so why and if not why not?
Never bought from them before, way too expensive.
-What style of bra is your favourite?
Balcony
-Do you buy online or in-store for underwear why?
I buy in store as I very rarely online shop but I like to see the products in person before buying to make sure they are of quality that I'd expect.
-If Victoria’s Secret was more inclusive would you be more likely to buy?
I would be more likely to consider them as a brand, however I still think that they would be too expensive for me personally.
-What do you think of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show?
I think it could be damaging as the women are sexualised and there is no diversity amongst the angels in terms of body types or disabilities. It’s not something I would personally watch because it is not a message I am at all interested in and goes against my strong beliefs in body positivity and diversity.
Interview 2
Chloe Hill, Age 21
-Where do you buy your lingerie from?
Boux Avenue.
-How often do you buy it?
Only ever at Birthdays and Christmas as it's free.
-What’s most important to you when choosing a brand?
More recently I’ve gone for quality and independent brands that source local or are stainable! I opt for clothing brands that also offer clothing at a reasonable price too! But as an extra treat I’ll look on OLIVE that get their wool in a sustainable matter off local farmers! They’re expensive but they’re a family run brand
-When you hear ‘Victoria’s Secret’ what is your first thought?
Sexist
-Have you bought from VS before? If so why and if not why not?
When the shop first opened I was a young teen and there was an expectation on me to- I’ve only ever bought 2 pants from there and their body sprays. Apparently I am “too small” for their sizes and therefore lost confidence in bras. However over the past 2 years I’ve found freedom and emancipation from being bra less.
-What style of bra is your favourite?
My fave style of bra is definitely a bralet! When I used to wear bras religiously I used to go for one called ‘chloe’ lol at boux Avenue cause I had really small boobs and they had a tiny tiny bit of padding. Now I go for the natural look.
-Do you buy online or in-store for underwear why?
If I ever buy underwear it’s usually online. However if I am with my mother it’s sometimes in store. She’s really body empowering.
-If Victoria’s Secret was more inclusive would you be more likely to buy?
I would say definitely not. For me the products are luxury and try to sell on the sexual side to it. Also the sizings are not consistent. This has been one of the main reasons I have not entered in over a few years.
-What do you think of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show?
I try to avoid the show at all costs due to that it doesn’t really add any value into my life and my mental health right now.. for some the show is something they look forward to but for me isn’t sadly. I’m not too sad about it as I prefer to indulge in things that offer body diversity and make me feel comfortable and positive in my own natural body.
Interview 3
Sarah Kosky, Age 33.
-Where do you buy your lingerie from?
Variations of Asda and Anne Summers
-How often do you buy it?
Around 2-3 times per year
-What’s most important to you when choosing a brand?
Do they cater for a wide range of sizing. An inclusive brand!
-When you hear ‘Victoria’s Secret’ what is your first thought?
Outdated views on the female body form
-Have you bought from VS before? If so why and if not why not?
No, the size restrictions and narrow choice of sizes. The underwear looks lovely but non practical for my lifestyle
-What style of bra is your favourite?
Balcony
-Do you buy online or in-store for underwear why?
Both, I buy in store where possible as I like to be able to try them on as my size varies dependant on fabric and style. However I have bought online from Kiss me deadly as they are only online.
-If Victoria’s Secret was more inclusive would you be more likely to buy?
Unlikely because I feel the company values vanity over all else.
-What do you think of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show?
I feel that although it is showcasing the latest designs from their brand it promoted self loathing and sets a poor example for young girls. It sets highly unachievable ideals of the ‘perfect’ and ‘pretty’ body shape to impressionable young girls and women who are desperately unhappy with their body which can worsen their mental health
